Minns says:- ... The 'fair hospitale' is the Hospital of St. Nicholas, or God's House, founded by Peter des Roches, circa 1205. The present garrison chapel was the nave of that of the hospital, and the Royal Parade its cemetery. After the Reformation the hospital buildings were converted into a residence for the Governor of Portsmouth, and since pulled down.
